What I’ve been doing (and hope to do next)
This week I finished rewriting chapters 1 and 3 of Slowpocalypse book 2 and started in on chapter 2 (which is the first point-of-view for a certain character.)
Chapters 1 and 3 are both Kat chapters, and they might conceivably have been one (really long) chapter. There’s a stretch of boring stuff in the middle of the action, though. Often it makes sense to ‘fast-forward’ through that kind of thing in the middle of a chapter using narrative techniques to compress a lot of tedium into a few sentences. (And after all, if it’s that boring you will likely skim over those bits if I don’t.)
But in this case I split it into two chapters. Partly because it would’ve been monstrously long otherwise, even with the ‘fast-forwarding’ – but mostly because at the same time all that boring stuff is going on with Kat, interesting things are happening with other characters. So chapter 2 occupies that gap and gets another story rolling.
As a bonus, when I reworked these chapters I found that the break between where chapter 1 ends and 3 begins works unexpectedly well. Because God is good.
